What is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis refers to the process of permanent hair removal using a small amount of heat in the hair follicle.

A probe approximately the size of a strand of hair is inserted into the natural opening of each hair follicle. We then administer enough current to permanently kill the stem cells and other growth factors in each follicle.

How is it different from laser hair removal?

It’s important to note that laser does not target individual hair follicles. Instead, the intensity of the laser is distributed throughout a given region of the body. With laser, some hairs will be permanently disabled, and others will be weakened enough to delay growth for a period of time. This is why laser is referred to as permanent hair reduction, while electrolysis is permanent hair removal.

In some individuals, laser hair removal can actually stimulate hair growth, especially on the face where there was previously fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). This condition, known as paradoxical hypertrichosis, affects many women. Electrolysis is the only permanent solution to effectively remove this unwanted hair for good.

FAQs

What are the different modalities (methods) of Electrolysis?

There are 3 modalities of electrolysis:

  • Galvanic Electrolysis: Uses a direct current to create a chemical reaction that destroys the follicle.

  • Thermolysis: Uses high-frequency alternating current to produce heat and destroy the follicle.

  • Blend: Combines both galvanic and thermolysis methods for effective results.

What areas of the body am I able to do electrolysis on?

Almost all areas of the body can be treated. Some common areas for women include the chin, upper and lower lip, sideburn area, bikini line, breasts, and abdomen.

Common areas for men include the hairline, beard line, top of the nose, shoulders and neck.

How many sessions will I need?

Facial hair grows in cycles, which is why multiple electrolysis sessions are needed to achieve permanent results

Anagen (Active Growth Phase) – The Best Time for Electrolysis!

• This is when hair is growing and attached to the follicle.

• Electrolysis is most effective because we can fully destroy the root.

Catagen (Transition Phase) – The Follicle Starts to Shrink

• The hair stops growing and detaches from the blood supply.

• Electrolysis is less effective in this stage.

Telogen (Resting & Shedding Phase) – Hair Falls Out

• The old hair naturally sheds, making room for new growth.

• It is harder to target these hairs because they are already on their way out.

Why You Need Multiple Sessions

Since not all hairs are in the same phase at the same time, we need to treat new hairs as they enter the anagen phase. That’s why most clients come in every 1–6 weeks to catch as many active hairs as possible!

Consistency is key! Over time, you’ll see fewer and finer hairs until they’re gone for good.

Will it hurt?

Many people describe the sensation during a treatment as a slight tingling or stinging feeling. Most people find it manageable. Pain tolerance and sensitivity vary, so what might be uncomfortable for one person may be tolerable for another. If you experience discomfort during your session we recommend buying a 5% Lidocaine cream to numb the area before your treatment.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

WATER! WATER! WATER! Hydrated skin conducts the electrical current more effectively, making the treatment more comfortable and effective.

Avoid shaving for 2-3 days before your scheduled appointment. The hair we are treating needs to be long enough to grab with a tweezer. If you’re currently tweezing or waxing the area please allow the hair time to grow out before your first treatment.
